Munich

The name of the city is usually interpreted as deriving from the Old German term Munichen, meaning "by the monks".  It is the capital city of Bavaria and the 3rd most populous city in Germany, behind Berlin and Hamburg, with a population of around 1.5 million (6 million if you include the metropolitan area).  Although the city was heavily bombed during World War 2 much of it has been restored.
